I must admit, as an automotive journalist, that I sometimes struggle to understand certain decisions made by car manufacturers. Sometimes they discontinue very popular models, while other models that could be highly appreciated here are not available. This was the case with the Toyota Land Cruiser until very recently. However, due to the high demand and popularity of the model elsewhere, Toyota decided to bring it back to the Canadian market. Finally, and this is excellent news for fans of the model.
The Japanese manufacturer's SUV boasts a robust appearance with very square and angular shapes, which is quite appealing. Its interior is spacious and packed with technology. Additionally, it offers exceptional off-road capabilities. As if that weren't enough, Toyota has equipped it with one of its best powertrains. In short, the new Toyota Land Cruiser has everything it takes to please, even though it didn't really need to, as its name has remained legendary over the years.
Range and Pricing
The model lineup consists of 2 versions for 2024. First, there is the 1958 edition, which serves as the entry-level model. As you might imagine, it is not within everyone's budget, with a starting price of $72,241.50. However, you do get more than a complete set of standard equipment for that amount. The Japanese manufacturer's SUV notably features an 8-inch touchscreen for its multimedia system, a 6-speaker audio system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless technologies. The front seats are heated, as is the steering wheel. In fact, the only thing really missing from the Japanese manufacturer's SUV at that price point is power seats, which I find quite puzzling. Moving on to the standard Land Cruiser version, which has a starting price of $80,241.50. You can add the Premium package for $6,000 or the First Edition package for $12,690. I know, it's getting very expensive, especially for a mainstream model, but what can you do, it's the reputation of the model that precedes it.
Category and Competition
Even though the Toyota Land Cruiser is a new model for us, it is not new to our market. It should be noted that the Japanese manufacturer's SUV was sold here many years ago. Moreover, it has retained an excellent reputation despite its absence from the market. This is why I believe the new Toyota Land Cruiser will be very popular.
Rivals: Acura MDX, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Cadillac XT6, Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Palisade, Infiniti QX60, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Sorento, Kia Telluride, Land Rover Defender, Lincoln Aviator, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas, Volvo XC90.
Design and Technologies
Let's start by talking about the model's design because it's a success all around. At first glance, you immediately know you're dealing with a vehicle whose off-road capabilities are above average. Additionally, the Toyota Land Cruiser exudes a certain sense of security with its robust look. It's clear that the model was designed for adventure. As if that wasn't enough, the Japanese manufacturer even offers two-tone paint options with a different color roof for some versions, which is visually quite interesting.
The interior of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is rather basic in its style. Furthermore, the quality of the finish is not optimal, but that's not really important because what matters is the design, which is very interesting. Additionally, the Japanese manufacturer's SUV features a digital screen for the dashboard as well as for the multimedia system. Ergonomics seem to have been well utilized since all the controls related to off-road driving are within easy reach. In short, the only thing that really disappoints me is the quality of the finish, especially for a model that is approaching $100,000.
Performance
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is equipped with a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. As you may have guessed, the Japanese manufacturer's SUV comes standard as a hybrid. This mechanical combination allows it to offer 326 horsepower, which is quite solid for the category. Moreover, the Japanese manufacturer's SUV has a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. In terms of fuel consumption, Toyota claims an average of 10.7 L/100 km in the city and 9.5 L/100 km on the highway, which is excellent for a vehicle of this size.
Weak Points
The Japanese manufacturer could have certainly made an additional effort in terms of interior finish. There is also the price range of the Toyota Land Cruiser, which is absolutely staggering.
Strong Points
The Toyota Land Cruiser is a legendary model with impressive off-road capabilities. This new generation will undoubtedly turn heads wherever it goes. The performance and fuel efficiency of the hybrid powertrain are simply astonishing.
Signature Element
The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of those rare vehicles that doesn't need an introduction because everyone already knows it.
Final Word
I sincerely have to thank Toyota for bringing the Land Cruiser back to the market. More and more automakers are listening to their customers, and it's clear that the Japanese manufacturer had every reason to do so with the Land Cruiser. Despite its small flaws and its sky-high price range, I believe the model will be very popular.
